 lavender          n. 薰衣草

薰衣草其實離我們不遠！

很多人被蚊子叮了會擦點薰衣草藥膏止癢或者睡前喝點薰衣草茶幫助入眠。更多的人送洗過衣服，拿回來的時候，衣服上總會有香香的味道，那就是薰衣草的味道。

沒錯，薰衣草和「薰」衣服有關聯，那是因為薰衣草和「洗」衣服更有關聯！

你看lavender帶了一個字根lav-，就是wash的意思，

由於它的香氣，薰衣草被用來薰香洗好的衣物、作成沐浴香氛

「 It(lavender) was used to scent(薫香) washed fabrics and as a bath perfume. 」

，既然用來薫香衣服，稱lavender為薰衣草，自然名符其實。

和薰衣草一樣有字根lav-=lau-=lut-(或lut、lug)=wash 的字不少，列舉於下：

ablution---n.洗身，沐浴

ab- 'away' + luere 'wash' ->用水把身體的髒污沖刷掉->沐浴

The original use was as a term in chemistry

and alchemy meaning 'purification by using liquids', hence 'purification

of the body by washing' (mid 16th century).

antediluvian /ˈæntɪdɪˈluvɪən/  adj.上古的，古老的

adj. coming before the Flood described in the Bible ([聖經]諾亞時代的大洪水之前的)；

di(away分開)+lute→沖開→沖淡->稀釋/稀薄的

deluge  n.大洪水，大暴雨

de去掉-lug(=luv;wash)-e->沖掉→有衝洗力量的水->大洪水，大暴雨

n.大洪水 [ a great flood of water]

n.大暴雨 [ a drenching rain; downpour.]

lave    v.沖洗，沐浴[to wash; bathe]

lava    n.熔岩 luv=wash(wash有另外一個意思是「水的奔流」，岩漿是一種熱的水流，

denoting the lava stream from Vesuvius-形容的是維蘇威火山的熔岩流)

lavatory  n.廁所、盥洗室(沖洗的地方 ，-ory地方)

lavish---adj.浪費的、慷慨的、 大量的 、

(Of a person) very generous or extravagant: He was lavish with his hospitality.

Spent or given in profusion: lavish praise

lav(=wash。wash有另外一個意思是「水的奔流」)-ish->像水的奔流一樣的花錢的

->浪費的
